A team of doctors at the Asian Heart Institute conducted a highly complex heart surgery on a woman who weighted just 35 kg. A 69-year old Mumbai woman named Asha Pathak who weighs just 35 kg was given a new hope of life after she underwent a complex valve replacement and bypass surgery successfully.

As per Asian Heart Institute News, the surgery was handled by a renowned cardiovascular thoracic surgeon and Padma Bhushan Dr. Ramakanta Panda who operated on Asha Phatak who is a retired bank manager. However, Panda had initially refused to operate on Phatak. Some of the details of the surgery are mentioned below:-

Panda stated that when Phatak came to the hospital, he refused to conduct the operation at first since her heart was pumping in a very weak manner with just 20-25% pumping. She also required two operations, a bypass and an aortic valve replacement. Apart from this Phatak was also very frail and weighed just 35 kg.

Keeping all these factors in mind, the operation was really complex and risky and Panda thought that the patient won’t be able to cope up with the stress of surgeries and would expire.

It was a 10-hour surgery and prior to it, she was admitted in the hospital for 19 days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Assisted by three doctors, Dr. Panda performed the bypass surgery with beating heart technique and partial surgery was performed using a heart lung machine. Following the bypass, the patient’s heart was stopped for replacing the narrowed valve with a new one. This according to Dr. Panda was one of the most challenging surgeries he had ever handled since it had 90 percent risk and had a heart which was pumping at just 25%.
