Expansion of AHI – The Research Centre

Asian Heart Institute has proved its worth time and again in case of cardiac care and problems. It expanded to give rise to a multi-speciality hospital which has opened in Orissa. It spreads over 1,50,000 sq. feet and has 300 beds to accommodate patients. The new branch or subsidiary of the AHI is called Asian Hospital and Research Centre or AHRC. It provides treatment of Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Dermatology, Dental, Cosmetic Surgery, Physiotherapy, Neurology, Obstetrics, Urology, Orthopaedic, ENT, Thoracic surgery, Cardiology, etc. The feedback received for all these services offered have been positive and has encouraged the team to move even further ahead.

The Case of 92 Pins

The fact that AHI steps where no other hospital or doctor is willing to step is strengthened by the fact that they undertook a case that every other hospital declined, tagging it as a lost cause. 56 year old Badri Lal was the subject of one of the most complex surgeries in medical history as a team of doctors at AHI operated and removed 92 needles and pins from his neck and abdomen, giving him his life back. 411 Redo Bypass Surgeries In 13 years : A Feather In The Cap For AHI!

Over a span of 12 years, the Asian Heart Institute has performed as many as 411 re-do bypass surgeries. They did these surgeries using the highly acclaimed beating heart technique. However, of the total 411 patients, 200 were diabetic. Efficient and accredited as they are, the doctors said that the number of patients might actually be a record number for one hospital.

Most people today do not know what a redo bypass surgery is. A redo bypass surgery is a repeat bypass surgery and is required for patients who have undergone a bypass surgery previously but some complications have been spotted and needs to be operated on again. The beating heart technique is a technique whereby the bypass surgery is performed on a patient without stopping the beating heart.

Results and reviews have shown that this procedure is by far safer and more desirable because it reduces the scope of complications in the future as compared to the conventional methods. In a conventional bypass surgery or redo bypass surgery, the heart is stopped temporarily so it can be operated upon. The feedback received from the patients has been extremely encouraging. Dr. Sunil Vanzara, who happens to be the senior cardiovascular thoracic surgeon at AHI, said that using their data as reference, they found out that the average number of graft arteries implanted per patient during a surgery is 3.2 at the AHI while the average number in the entire world is 2.3 The data from Asian Heart Institute News was a clear indication of the fact that coronary artery disease in India was far more alarming and common than anywhere else in the world.

Generally, a redo bypass surgery is needed when blockages develop post bypass surgery. The redo bypass surgery is a complex and risky procedure. The lungs and heart sticks to the breast bone after the bypass surgery making the redo bypass surgery quite risky. The beating heart technique uses ariel grafts and that reduces the risk factor.

Dr. Ramakanta Panda, who is the vice chairman of the AHI said that heart diseases have been the leading cause of deaths all over the world. For almost 40 years, the rise in the coronary disease rate in India has shot up four times. Know about the latest developments at AHI through Asian Heart Institute News, Read more.

Panda stated that when Phatak came to the hospital, he refused to conduct the operation at first since her heart was pumping in a very weak manner with just 20-25% pumping. She also required two operations, a bypass and an aortic valve replacement. Apart from this Phatak was also very frail and weighed just 35 kg.

Keeping all these factors in mind, the operation was really complex and risky and Panda thought that the patient won’t be able to cope up with the stress of surgeries and would expire.
